Split
design may
delay overpass

There may be an alternative to building a controversial $28
million overpass on Golden Gate Parkway at Airport-Pulling Road,
a transportation consulting firm has determined. Parsons
Brinckerhoff Quade & Douglas Inc. has determined that a
different design for the intersection has the potential to at
least delay the construction of the overpass that is proposed to
elevate traffic on the parkway over Airport-Pulling Road. Full story...

Audit reinforces likelihood county will start cremating indigent to save money
Those who die penniless and alone in Lee County in the future likely will be cremated instead of buried. An audit released Monday shows it costs taxpayers $1,950 to bury someone, but only $375 to cremate them. Auditor Dave Rollman said the county could have saved more than $100,000 had all 370 indigents documented by the county in the past two years been cremated. "I asked why they bury anybody,'' said Chuck Short, chief auditor for Clerk of Courts Charlie Green. "Cremation is less expensive, so why not?''

Cost of illegal mangrove trimming to exceed $5,000
An upscale Marco Island community association is in trouble with state officials for illegally cutting down mangroves. The man who oversaw the trimming should have known better, city officials said. But because he didn't, it is going to cost some Hideaway Beach Association members more than $5,000 in fines and administrative reimbursements.

Lawyer: Lionel Tate 'inclined' to accept plea offer
WEST PALM BEACH An attorney for a teenager who once received a life sentence for murdering a 6-year-old playmate said Monday the boy "is inclined" to accept a plea bargain that would allow him to be released within three months. Henry Hunter, a Tallahassee lawyer advising Lionel Tate's mother, said attorneys were trying to work out "two procedural matters." He declined to specify those issues or speculate when Tate might accept the offer but said, "The plea is not being rejected."

'Alone all of a sudden' ... group provides a social network for widows and widowers
It was Helen Murnane's way of asking Frederick Burt to dance. Murnane, 75, of Marco Island, smiled shyly as she looked up at the tall Burt and spoke. "I had open heart surgery a year ago and I haven't danced since," Murnane said to him. "We'll take it real slow then," said Burt, as he led Murnane onto the dance floor, where Rick Haworth was playing "Mack the Knife" on keyboard. Burt and Murnane were among more than 100 people who attended a recent meeting of the Widow and Widowers Association.

Wall Street: Nasdaq tops 2,000 mark, Dow rises more than 120 points
NEW YORK The Nasdaq composite index burst past 2,000 on Monday, and the Dow Jones industrials surged more than 120 points as investors shook off concerns about the impact of mad cow disease and looked optimistically toward 2004. The market also got a lift from early indications that the holiday shopping season had gone well, including a report from MasterCard that consumer spending was up 6.5 percent. Portfolio managers may be looking for more positive news in January, which is typically a good month for the markets, said Brian Bush, director of equity research at Stephens Inc.

Wall Street veteran sees year ending on upswing
The 2003 economic year was marked by war, low interest rates and a creeping optimism. The year started dismally, said Wall Street pioneer Muriel Siebert, but is now on an upswing. "Things really look like they're getting better," Siebert said, "and that's wonderful." Siebert heads the discount brokerage firm Muriel Siebert & Co. Inc. and was the first woman to buy a seat on the New York Stock Exchange. She also served as the New York state superintendent of banks for five years.

Spotlight: Familiarity breeds success for Gulf Coast
For a long time, Gulf Coast High boys basketball coach Jose Arias had an idea that his current squad could be something special. Did he know for weeks? Months? Try years. Since these players were freshmen, Arias thought the Sharks could make a big run in the 2003-04 season. So far, his powers of prognostication haven't failed him. The Sharks are off to their best start ever, have one tournament title under their belt and won their opener in the Naples Daily News Gulfshore Shootout, the only Collier County team to do so this year.

Gulfshore Shootout: St. Albans overpowers Gulf Coast
Cameron Lewis' highlight-film slam-dunk off a rebound late in the fourth quarter Monday against Gulf Coast said it all. The 6-foot-7 St. Albans forward's rim-rattling, backboard-vibrating put-back got a big "ooh" and a rousing cheer from the partisan Sharks crowd at Barron Collier High School. But you couldn't blame them. It was hard not be astounded and applaud for the talented elite private school from Washington, D.C. With a 78-54 victory over Gulf Coast in the Naples Daily News Gulfshore Shootout, St. Albans proved why it is the favorite to win the tournament.

Review: There's lots to respect in high-flying 'Peter Pan'
A daring Australian director and a young American actor turn a Scottish writer's classic into magic again in "Peter Pan." The live-action version of J.M. Barrie's timeless story is a delectable slice of fantasy filled with vivid colors and great-looking sets. The familiar tale is as haunting as it is exciting in the hands of director P.J. Hogan ("My Best Friend's Wedding"). The script by Hogan and Michael Goldenberg does justice to Barrie as it takes viewers on an enchanted journey.
